Discovery Holiday- Daoine - Àiteachan – Sgeulachdan
posted: 23rd April 2008
Visitors to Skye do not always get a true impression of island life.
There is an eagerness to hear spoken Gaelic and to witness or participate in seasonal activities. Staffin has an immense range of assets, being a stronghold of Gaelic, rich in folk memory, geology, archaeology with a healthy percentage engaged in crofting. The Talking Landscape discovery holiday has built on this strength to add further dimensions to Ceumannan. The pilot holiday ran very successfully in 2006. It was repeated in July 2007 with another five- day course. Sgeulachdan na Tire was held through the medium of Gaelic and kindly supported by Ḅrd na Gàidhlig. Four local tutors (Maoilios Caimbeul, Dugald Ross, Alec Bhaltois and Śne Ghilleasbuig) were joined by eight participants for a primarily outdoor holiday.
Together we guided one another through the footprints of time crossing over the place-names from history and Gaelic culture into geology and archaeology. We focused on poetry, stories and song from this land, were encouraged to create our own poems, and challenged by the sheep shearing and peatcutting. Also included was a lovely boat trip with Staffin Bay Cruises. Everyone participated in the ceilidhs. It was a memorable week full of discoveries - Daoine - Àiteachan – Sgeulachdan.

Please let us know whether you would be interested to join us in 2008.
